Oil vs Lacquer – What to Choose?
Oil finish creates the most natural look and feel of your valued floor, it also has one major benefit – localised repairs can be carried out with minimal disruption and for relatively low cost.
Downsides of having oiled floor is it is not as resilient as lacquered floor. Although now manufacturers create oils with hardeners built inside to make up for the loss of strength, so hardwax oil is now pretty good compared to just on oil finish, but still will not last as long as lacquered floor. If foot traffic is very low in your property, and no pets or children – you would probably be really well having such finish.
Also oiled floor would require so much more frequent maintenance to keep oil replenished and maintained/present. That would range anywhere from every 3 months to once a year and ongoing. Would this outweigh the cost savings on localised scratch repairs over the period of 10 years if this was your concern?
The benefits of lacquered floor are great – easy maintenance, no need to replenish as oiled floor, also such finish is much harder wearing that will probably last 10 or many more years if the floor is well looked after.
Lacquered floor is so much more resilient compared to oiled one, but one major downside is if scratch happens that breaks the lacquer surface – the whole floor has to be sanded and refinished again to correct such mishap. Localised repair is not an option as with oiled floor. So if you are prepared to live with the scratch or few – this could be your choice of the finish!
